Long-Term Care
What is long-term care?
Long-term care is tailored to support people who can no longer live safely and independently at home but don’t need to be in a hospital. Long-term care homes offer 24/7 nursing and personal care, and full support in activities of daily living. Long-term care homes in Canada are regulated by provincial governments and/or their respective health authorities and must meet established standards of care. Rates are set by government in each province.
What is retirement living?
People living in retirement living residences do not require 24/7 nursing and personal care, but residents may independently choose to supplement included care and services with additional personal or nursing care. The rates in retirement living residences are not set by the government. To learn more about retirement options at Extendicare, please contact the retirement home of your choice. What is continuing care type B?
In several of our Alberta homes, we offer Continuing Care Type B, formerly Designated Supportive Living, spaces. This type of accommodation is designed for adults who need support with many activities of daily living, but do not require the level of care provided in Continuing Care A, or long-term care, homes. This classification of home is only applicable to Alberta.

How much does long-term care cost? Is it affordable?
In Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care sets the rates for all long-term care homes. These rates are set every year and cover a variety of services, including nursing and personal care; meals and snacks; assistive devices to encourage independence; on-site medical care provided by a physician who makes regular visits to the home, as well as housekeeping and laundry services. Accommodation is a separate fee. Additionally, optional services, such as cable TV, hair salon appointments or dentist appointments, vision care or specialized foot care, can also be charged to the resident separately.

In Alberta, long-term or continuing care homes adhere to the Continuing Care Regulation, which oversees accommodation charges. The Alberta government sets the maximum resident accommodation charge in continuing care homes. In supportive living settings, the accommodation charge is set by the operator and can vary for each facility.

In Manitoba, the cost is shared between the provincial government and the resident. The daily rate, or residential charge, is based on the resident’s net income as reported on their latest Notice of Assessment from Canada Revenue Agency.

Can I bring personal items with me?
We want you to feel at home and we encourage you to bring personal items as space allows. You may want to bring pictures, framed photos of your family, or decorative pillows. We provide bed linens and towels, however, if you would like to bring your own, you are welcome to do so.
How do I offer feedback?
We value resident and family feedback and see it as essential to our work to continually improve experiences at our homes. If you have feedback about the care you or a loved one are receiving, contact the home’s Executive Director or Director of Care.
How can I recognize an exceptional team member?
The Care Champions program honours team members who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care to our residents and their families, or who support their fellow colleagues. Nominations are open to all team members across any home, and anyone — whether a colleague, resident, or family member — can submit a nomination.

How do I start services or request more information?
Patients can access home health care through a referral from a doctor or hospital, by contacting a local public health authority, or by contacting an organization like ParaMed directly.
Access to publicly funded home care varies by province, depending on how each province has chosen to organize care in the community.
If you are accessing care through your local health authority, a care coordinator will determine your eligibility and ParaMed will work in partnership with them to deliver your care as they have authorized.
If you are considering services for yourself or someone you love, ParaMed is here to guide and support you. Our team members will take the time to listen, understand your unique needs, and walk you through the available care options.
To get started or request more information, contact your local ParaMed branch or submit an online inquiry through the ParaMed Home Health Care website.
